Its gracefully longish shape and pink and reddish onionskin layers are reminiscent of the hues of the skin of smoked ham, therefore it is commonly known as „ham onion”. It can be used raw or cooked, both as a spice and a vegetable. It comes from France, is a favourite of gourmets, and is primarily a pride of Mediterranean cuisine.
